Cloud Servers for Small Teams: $4 to €20 a Month Compared
What a small virtual server costs at three providers, how much traffic each includes, and the free panel that makes self-hosting several tools manageable.
Quick answer
A 2 GB server cost $12 a month at both DigitalOcean and Akamai Cloud on 27 October 2026, with 2 TB of transfer at Akamai and 2,000 GiB at DigitalOcean. Hetzner's comparable CPX12 cost €11.99 excluding VAT, with 20 TB of traffic in EU locations. Coolify is a free, Apache-2.0 panel for running apps on servers like these.
Several open-source tools in our other categories, such as CRMs, help desks, analytics and rank trackers, can replace a per-seat subscription if you have a server to run them on. This page prices that server. Figures were read from provider pages on 27 October 2026.

Profiles: DigitalOcean, Hetzner Cloud, Coolify.
DigitalOcean
DigitalOcean bills per second with a 60-second minimum and a monthly cap on bundled plans, so a server running all month costs the listed price. Each Droplet gets a public IPv4 address, included at no extra cost on bundled plans, and inbound bandwidth is free. The $4 server has only 512 MiB of memory, which is tight for anything with a database. For a business app, the $6 or $12 plans are the realistic starting points.
Hetzner Cloud
Hetzner prices in euros, excluding VAT. Its EU locations include 20 TB of traffic on every plan we read, ten times or more what similarly priced US-dollar servers include. The allowance depends on location: the same page lists a US CPX11 (2 vCPU, 2 GB) at €17.99 with 1 TB. On our read date, every order button on the page carried the line "This product is currently unavailable", so confirm availability before you design around a model.
Akamai Cloud
Akamai's shared-CPU plans (formerly sold under the Linode name, whose pricing page now redirects to Akamai) start with the Nanode 1 GB at $5 a month: 1 vCPU, 25 GB of storage and 1 TB of transfer. The 2 GB plan matches DigitalOcean at $12, with 2 TB of transfer. Outbound transfer beyond the allowance costs US$0.005 per GB, and the page notes that prices vary by region.
Do you need a deployment panel?
Coolify sits on top of servers like these. You connect a server over SSH, and Coolify deploys applications, databases and services onto it. It is Apache-2.0 licensed and free forever to self-host with all features. A hosted control plane costs $5 a month for 2 servers plus $3 for each extra server, with 20% off annually. Coolify does not supply servers. You still pay one of the providers above, and you still own backups.
For one app, a panel is optional. For a small team running several open-source tools on one or two servers, it saves rebuilding each deployment by hand.
Rough budgets
- One small self-hosted tool: a $6 to $12 server.
- Several tools on one box, EU users: Hetzner CPX22 at €19.99 plus VAT, availability permitting.
- Several tools, US-dollar billing: Akamai or DigitalOcean at 4 GB, $24 at Akamai.
Then compare against the per-seat alternatives: our CRM comparison and help desk comparison show what the hosted versions cost. If you self-host credentials, read our password manager comparison first.
Key points
- Entry servers start at $4 (DigitalOcean, 512 MiB) and $5 (Akamai Nanode, 1 GB).
- At 2 GB of memory, DigitalOcean and Akamai both charged $12 a month; Hetzner's CPX12 cost €11.99 excluding VAT.
- Hetzner included 20 TB of traffic in EU locations against 1 TB in its US locations.
- Hetzner's page showed its plans as currently unavailable on our read date; check before planning around one.
- Coolify is free to self-host and its cloud control plane costs $5 a month for 2 servers plus $3 for each extra.
Questions
What is the cheapest cloud server for a small business app?
The lowest prices we read on 27 October 2026 were DigitalOcean's $4 Droplet with 512 MiB of memory and Akamai's $5 Nanode with 1 GB. Most business apps with a database are more comfortable on 1 to 2 GB, which cost $6 to $12 a month at those providers.
Why does Hetzner include so much more traffic?
Hetzner's Regular Performance plans in its EU locations included 20 TB of traffic a month on our read date, compared with up to a few terabytes on similar US-dollar plans. The same page listed only 1 TB for its US locations, so the generous allowance depends on where the server runs.
Do these prices include tax and an IPv4 address?
Hetzner's prices exclude VAT, and its price block is headed 'Price incl. IPv4' without stating that directly in the text. DigitalOcean says each Droplet has its own public IPv4 address, included at no extra cost on bundled plans. Akamai's page notes prices vary by region.
What is Coolify and do I need it?
Coolify is an open-source, Apache-2.0 panel that deploys apps, databases and services onto servers you connect to it. You do not need it to run one app, but it helps when a small team self-hosts several tools. Self-hosted Coolify is free, and its cloud control plane starts at $5 a month.
Is self-hosting cheaper than paying for software per seat?
Sometimes. A $12 server can run open-source tools that would otherwise cost per seat, which saves money as a team grows. But someone must handle updates, backups and security. For very small teams, hosted free tiers are often cheaper once that time is counted.
