What you get, and the catch
- Best for
- Teams that only need daily rank tracking and are comfortable running a small Docker app.
- Watch out
- It does rank tracking only, not backlinks or audits. It needs a paid SERP-scraping API or your own proxies, and the README says some listed providers no longer work.
SerpBear describes itself as "an Open Source Search Engine Position Tracking and Keyword Research App" that tracks a site's keyword positions in Google and sends alerts when they change. It is MIT-licensed and advertises unlimited keywords and unlimited domains.
Technically it is small. The README lists Next.js for the front and back end and SQLite for the database, and the repository ships a Dockerfile and a docker-compose file. The README says it can run on some free hosting tiers. Any small server you already run will also do; see the hosting category.
The running cost is search data. SerpBear does not scrape Google itself without help. It needs a SERP-scraping API or your own proxy IPs. The README lists providers with their prices, for example serper.dev at "$1.00/1000 req" pay-as-you-go, and services starting from $29 to $50 a month. It also marks some listed services as no longer working, so check a provider is current before choosing it.
Do the arithmetic for your own keyword count. Tracking 300 keywords once a day is about 9,000 requests a month. At the pay-as-you-go rate above, that is about $9, compared with a commercial suite's monthly fee. That figure is our calculation from the README's price, not a quote.
SerpBear covers rank tracking only: no backlink index, no site audits, no competitor research. Compare it with the full suites in the SEO tools category.
