What you get, and the catch

Technical teams that want to self-host credential sharing with no user limit, and add SSO later.
Watch out
Pro has a 10-user minimum. SSO is a Pro feature, not part of the free Community Edition.

Passbolt is open-source credential management aimed at teams rather than individuals. Its API repository is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License version 3.

The pricing page has three editions:

  • Community Edition: "Free forever", with unlimited users. You host it yourself.
  • Pro: $4.90 per user per month billed annually, with a 10-user minimum. Volume discounts apply after 100 users. The page's structured data gives the same price as EUR 4.50.
  • Enterprise: custom quote.

Pro is the lowest edition with single sign-on, through Microsoft, Google and OpenID. The page's own description says Passbolt runs "self-hosted or as a Passbolt-hosted cloud service". We did not read the cloud pricing tab, so the figures here are for the editions listed above.

The 10-user minimum matters for very small teams. A five-person company choosing Pro still pays for 10 seats, which is $49 a month. For a team under 10 that needs SSO, the per-seat comparison with other managers changes.

At 10 users: $0 on Community Edition (plus your server), or $49 a month on Pro. At 25 users on Pro: $122.50 a month. Compare it in the password managers category.
