What you get, and the catch

Best for
Teams that want to run their whole code and CI platform on their own servers, or one vendor for source, pipelines and issues.
Watch out
Free on GitLab.com is limited to 5 users per private top-level group, and Premium jumps to $29 per user.

The GitLab pricing page lists the same three tiers for GitLab.com and for self-managed installs:

  • Free: $0 per user. On GitLab.com, private top-level groups are limited to 5 users, with 400 compute minutes a month and 10 GiB of storage.
  • Premium: $29 per user per month, billed annually, with 10,000 compute minutes a month.
  • Ultimate: custom pricing, with 50,000 compute minutes a month.

The page counts every user in a top-level group toward the subscription.

The self-managed free tier is the open-source Community Edition. GitLab's FAQ says the "Free tier of the self-managed offering" is "GitLab Community Edition, which is free to use". The GitLab FOSS mirror is labelled MIT License and describes itself as "a read-only mirror of GitLab, with all proprietary code removed". A team can run its code hosting and CI on its own server with no licence fee, and buy Premium later if it needs the paid features.

The 5-user cap on GitLab.com Free is the line to watch. A sixth developer means either Premium for everyone (at least $174 a month for six people) or moving to self-managed. We could not find single sign-on in the plan text we read, so check SSO with GitLab if you need it.

At 10 developers: $290 a month on Premium, or $0 self-managed plus your server. Compare it in the developer platforms category.
