What you get, and the catch

- Teams that want chat they can run on their own server with no licence fee, or a low-cost hosted version.
- Watch out
- The free cloud plan keeps only 10,000 messages searchable, and free self-hosted mobile notifications are capped for most organisations.

Zulip Cloud
- Free: 10,000 messages of search history and 5 GB of file storage in total.
- Standard: $6.67 per user per month billed annually, or $8 monthly.
- Plus: $10 per user per month annually, or $12 monthly, with a 10-user minimum.
Self-hosted
- Free: the complete chat product. Mobile push notifications are unlimited for eligible communities, but limited to 10 users for other organisations.
- Basic: $3.50 per user per month billed monthly, with $20 a month off for the first year.
- Business: $6.67 per user per month annually, or $8 monthly, with a 25-user minimum.
- Enterprise: contact sales.
The self-hosted mobile notification limit is the detail to plan around. A company of more than 10 people that self-hosts and relies on phone notifications will need a paid self-hosted plan, though at $3.50 a user that is still the cheapest per-seat option in this category.
