What you get, and the catch
- Best for
- Organisations that want Google-Analytics-style depth while keeping all data on their own infrastructure.
- Watch out
- The cloud price on our read date was printed without a currency and with contradictory billing labels, so we do not quote it.
Matomo is the most complete of the self-hostable analytics tools we track. Its repository says it is "released under the GPL v3 (or later) license".
The pricing page lists the On-Premise Community edition as "Free forever" with unlimited users and unlimited hits. That is the whole product, run on your own server, and it is what most small teams considering Matomo actually use.
Matomo also sells:
- Matomo Cloud, priced by hits per month in tiers from 50,000 to more than 10 million. The README advertises a 21-day free trial. On our read date the cloud figure was printed as "29 Per month" and "29 Per year" side by side, with no currency, which is not internally consistent. We quote no cloud price until the page shows one clearly.
- On-Premise bundles of premium features in euros (Team, Business, Enterprise). The bundle cards and the comparison table printed different figures, so we do not quote them either. SAML authentication appears in the Enterprise bundle.
The reason to pick Matomo over a lighter tool is depth: segments, goals, custom dimensions and raw data you own. The cost is running a PHP application and its database. Our hosting category covers servers that fit.
For a team of any size: $0 in licence fees on Community, plus hosting. Compare it in the web analytics category.
