What you get, and the catch
- Best for
- Teams that want live chat, email and social messages in one inbox and are able to self-host, or want a cheap hosted start.
- Watch out
- The free cloud plan is limited to 2 agents, 500 conversations a month and 30 days of data, and SSO is Enterprise-only.
Chatwoot is an open-source support inbox. Its repository README says it is "Released under the MIT License", one of the most permissive licences among the self-hosted tools we track.
There are two ways to run it. The self-hosted plans page lists the Community Edition at $0, "Free forever", with paid Premium Support at $19 per agent per month and an Enterprise Edition at $99.
The cloud pricing starts with a free Hacker plan for up to 2 agents. It is limited to 500 conversations a month, live chat only, and 30 days of data retention. Paid cloud plans are Startups at $19 per agent per month, Business at $39 and Enterprise at $99. Neither page says whether these prices are for monthly or annual billing. SAML single sign-on is Enterprise-only.
Two things matter if you ever plan to leave. Chatwoot's FAQ says "your data belongs to you", and that conversations and contacts can be exported through its API at any time. Chatwoot also offers the Startups plan free to open-source projects on request.
At 5 agents: Cloud Startups costs $95 a month. Self-hosted costs nothing in licence fees, plus the server; see the hosting category. Compare it with the commercial desks in the help desk category.
